Patent Filing Questions

Short answers to typical questions US counsel ask about Russian patent filings.

For foreign applicants, Rospatent requires representation through a Russian patent attorney. We act as your local patent team, file and prosecute the case before Rospatent and handle all communication in English.

Yes. You can claim priority from a US filing (typically within 12 months) or enter the Russian national phase from a PCT application. We adapt your specification to Russian practice and keep the same priority chain.

Ultimately the patent must be prosecuted in Russian, but we can work from your English draft. We prepare a Russian-language specification and claims, coordinate any clarifications with you in English and keep both versions aligned.

In Russia, maintenance fees accrue from the filing date and are usually payable annually starting from the 3rd year. We monitor due dates, remind you in advance and pay annuities to Rospatent on your instructions.
